Hydro Molefe makes healing music.

A Motswana singer-songwriter and musician based in Gaborone, he infuses Botswana traditional folk music with pop into an afro-contemporary folk sound that is playful on the surface and introspective underneath. His melodic style reflects a love of folk, improvised and instrumental music, all of it stemming from Botswana's original traditional dance and music. He writes and leads his own songs, and collaborates with live bands to create a band of conscious music that uplifts and inspires.

He was born and raised in Old Naledi — the roots of some of Botswana's finest artists, and a place where nothing is handed to anyone. Following the lead of the country's vocal trailblazers, the young aspirant won a host of local talent shows, President's competitions and constituency competitions, building his reputation the way Botswana's best have always built theirs: in front of live audiences, in rooms that had to be won.

As a youth in the dynamic twenty-first century, his passion for folk music was kindled by his love of traditional dance and percussion, and shaped by the revolutionary sounds of Lekofi Sejeso, George Swabi, Stika Sola, Setampore and Rratsie Setlhako. The the afro beats, pop and  jazz came later. The percussion came first, and it is still the floor everything else is built on.

His single “Darlie” — short for Darling — releases on 2nd September 2026 through X3mix Records. It is an afro-pop-influenced Setswana Folk pop song, and it does something modern African pop rarely risks: it declares love plainly, in the singer's own language, without irony or a twist. “Darlie” is the word Batswana already use — an English endearment worn smooth by daily Setswana use until it belongs to both languages and neither. The song is named after the way people already speak to the people they love.

“Darlie” is the front door to his first album with X3mix Records— a continuation of his work to bring peace, enlightenment and healing to the world through music in these challenging times.

The album follows in Q1 2027.
